Question from Weight Management/Bariatric Group
Answers:
Jen R. “I’ve had no cook clients who I work with to find a combo of healthy take out, meal delivery kits, and pairing things like crudité and hummus, or utilizing Trader Joe’s precooked foods…”
Leah M. “…Help them identify good options in microwaveable meals and suggest easy add-ons like bagged, pre-washed spinach, cooked beans in pouches, pouches or cans of fish or meat, salad kits, pre-cut fruit and vegetables that can be eaten raw.”
Jessica K. “…work with where they are at… use high protein meal replacement drinks for 1-2 meals a day, help them choose better restaurant options, help them be more informed with choices by looking at nutrition info from restaurants, mindfulness through tracking etc. …still able to improve their health and weight without having to push them where they do not want to go. But sometimes people are not ready for lifestyle change and it's time to have a conversation about that too - what are they expecting/hoping to get out of your services and if they really don't want your services maybe they prefer to discontinue. This is client centered care. Doesn't matter what we think people "should" but what do they think? We are just advisors in their health care journey.”
Cathy S. “I have found meal delivery to be a game changer for those who have the budget for them. Factor, Hello Fresh and others have ready made meals that can be mostly tailored to their needs. The issue with these is cost. Otherwise we discuss easy meals they do not have to cook or even do much prep to create. Most of my folks who don’t cook are open to basic pre prepped items like salad kits, rotisserie chicken, tuna, raw veggies and fruits, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. but there are some that are not going to change much and we find the best take out we can.”

Politics and Food Banks
“If you are angry with your food bank for talking politics, then you aren't really fighting hunger. You're fighting for the status quo.” - Anina Estrem, MPP
Hunger is Political – Reintroducing justice and dignity to the fight to end hunger
We have gotten some comments and messages on both Facebook and Instagram accusing Build Up Dietitians of being “too political”. We’ll just rephrase and echo what Anina wrote.
If you’re angry at us for talking about issues like cuts to food and social programs, dietitians working for the Federal government being unjustly fired, food safety inspectors losing their jobs, medical and nutrition research funding being eliminated, anti-vax rhetoric, etc., and accusing us of being political, you aren’t really fighting to make America healthy. You’re just trying to silence people and not acknowledge the reality of what is happening that is going to affect food, nutrition and health in the U.S.
LinkedIn: Countering Disinformation
“This is pure nonsense. Baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO₃. It is a salt composed of a sodium cation and a bicarbonate anion. There’s no such thing as “organic” or “GMO” baking soda.
Fear-mongering about food without understanding basic chemistry is ridiculous.”
